Shaping the future: DMG MORI inspires young talents at the WorldSkills 2024

From September 10 to 15, 2024, 1,400 young professionals from all over the world met at the WorldSkills Lyon to compete in their respective disciplines and win the 47th WorldSkills Competition. DMG MORI is supporting the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event with a large machine portfolio, technical support on site and preparation courses for the young competitors. A key objective is to actively counteract the global shortage of skilled workers. “It is a great honor for me to recognize the outstanding achievements of these young talents. I am therefore delighted to be part of the WorldSkills 2024 in Lyon,” said Irene Bader, Member of the Board at DMG MORI, as she presented the medals for CNC Milling. “Young talents play a key role in shaping the future of our industry.” DMG MORI has been a partner for many years and is happy to be involved in the promotion of up-and-coming expertise. “The focus is on passion and ability. That's why we see WorldSkills as a great opportunity for us too. Together, we want to shape the future of technology and inspire the next generation of skilled workers.“

DMG MORI's involvement in WorldSkills began in 2007, initially as the main sponsor of the WorldSkills Competitions. Since 2016, the machine tool manufacturer has been a Global Industry Partner of the umbrella organization WorldSkills International. Teams from 34 countries regularly compete in the CNC Turning and CNC Milling disciplines alone. DMG MORI is also supporting the new Additive Manufacturing skill as a sponsor. “As an innovation leader in machine tool manufacturing, DMG MORI has the experience and technological know-how to perfectly support the WorldSkills in CNC Turning and CNC Milling as well as in Additive Manufacturing,” adds Jan Möllenhoff, Managing Director of the DMG MORI Academy. In Lyon, this was achieved with a total of 15 DMU 40 Plus and 14 CTX 350 machines as well as expert staff to support the event. High-tech machines like these are what is increasingly becoming standard in the day-to-day work of the young competitors. They offer the ideal introduction to productive and efficient CNC machining and the basis for a sustainable change in manufacturing

Asian participants in the top places

As in previous years, the competitors at the WorldSkills 2024 are demonstrating impressive performances that are the result of intensive preparation. Weijie Long (China) took first place in the CNC Milling competition, while Junsu Kim (Korea) triumphed in CNC Turning. The silver medals in CNC Milling went to Jongsu Nam (Korea) and André Luis Dono (Brazil). The bronze medal winner was Pham Thanh Dat (Vietnam). Four competitors won silver medals in CNC Turning: Daimu Tazawa (Japan), Manbing Chen (China), Paramin Phakutlo (Thailand), and João Lucas Gomes Guimarães (Brazil). The bronze medal was won by Yong-Xuan Lin (Chinese Taipei).

Common goals with WorldSkills

With its extensive commitment to the WorldSkills Competitions, DMG MORI is making a significant contribution to training the skilled workers required for the Machining Transformation (MX). According to Jan Möllenhoff, this applies in particular to young talent: “Well-trained specialists are the be-all and end-all, especially for the MX pillars of process integration, automation and digital transformation (DX).” This view goes hand in hand with the common goal of DMG MORI and WorldSkills: “The promotion and professional strengthening of young talent in traditional apprenticeships is a priority for us because they form the backbone of entire industries in their domestic markets.” DMG MORI will continue its support at the upcoming WorldSkills Competitions. The WorldSkills 2026 will be held in China and 2028 in Japan – both only about 100 km away from the respective DMG MORI production sites.
