Automated complete machining for the future

The Siemens Healthineers AG factory at the Kemnath site in Upper Palatinate was established in 1962 and has developed from a purely contract-based manufacturer into a Center of Competence for mechatronics. The workforce of about 1,200 employees manufactures many of the components for the leading medical technology provider’s product range. Among other things, the portfolio includes computer tomographs, MRI devices and radiotherapy products. In order to remain competitive, in 2021 the company started to analyze all of its production lines to identify problems and find solutions. As a result, a flexible production facility with four DMU 125 P duoBLOCK machining centers was installed in 2024 by DMG MORI. These machines operate with a high degree of automation via a linear pallet pool (LPP)and are supplied with tools via Central Tool Storage (CTS).

Challenge

  • Large part variety (70 components)
  • Aging machines (avg. 15 years old)
  • High manual intervention
  • Shortage of skilled workers
  • Declining competitiveness

Added Value

  • Fully automated, flexible production
  • Reduced manual workload
  • Increased process reliability
  • 24/7 machine utilization
  • Integrated data and process connectivity

Solution

  • Four DMU 125 P duoBLOCK machining centers
  • LPP 2000 with up to 100 pallets
  • CTS with 960 tools
  • LPS 4 for complete system and data management
  • SAP interface + TDM tool data integration
  • Automatic, stress‑free hydraulic clamping

Results

  • Production doubled
  • 30% shorter cycle times
  • Maximum machine availability
  • No non‑productive downtime
  • Improved component quality
  • Lower dependency on skilled labor

We succeeded in more than doubling our productivity with the new manufacturing system from DMG MORI. Thanks to the LPS 4 master computer, the entire system is completely networked with our own systems.
