Horizontal Boring with DMG MORI Precision Boring

In the field of horizontal boring, DMG MORI is expanding its portfolio with the powerful and versatile products from DMG MORI Precision Boring.

Horizontal machining always has an advantage when high spindle speeds and feed rates are required. In the case of horizontal drilling in heavy-duty machining, specially designed drilling machines are recommended because they are more powerful and offer a significantly higher torque. DMG MORI Precision Boring Co., Ltd. (formerly KURAKI Co., Ltd.) specializes in manufacturing solutions for exactly such applications. Founded in 1938 in Nagaoka, Japan, the company develops and builds horizontal boring and milling machines for heavy-duty machining of large and heavy workpieces. Up to 6,000 mm travel in the X-axis and 40 tons of workpiece weight can be machined with high precision. The company has been part of DMG MORI since 2024.

Productive horizontal
The horizontal boring machines from DMG MORI Precision Boring are designed for the precision machining of large, heavy workpieces.

The aerospace sector, die & mold and energy technology – high-precision components are vital in these and many other industries. The production of these parts requires machines that are at least as precise. The machines, in turn, must also be manufactured with the highest accuracy. Precision machines such as those from DMG MORI Precision Boring therefore play a decisive role in all these industries – both in the direct production of components and indirectly in the manufacturing of machines for parts production.

Maximum machining diversity in horizontal boring

Maximum machining
For maximum precision, the guideways of the rotary tables are hand-scraped, as are the guideways in the X and Z axes.

DMG MORI Precision Boring has built up a product range that meets the individual requirements of its customers. The machines in the KBT series, for example, have a 360° rotating, hand-scraped rotary table with an indexing of 0.001° as standard. The fixed tables of the larger machines can be supplemented with an integrated rotary table, so that these models also offer maximum flexibility. The innovative strength of DMG MORI Precision Boring is also demonstrated by a tilting table for the KBT-13T.A. This was developed for the machining of a rotor hub for a wind turbine. The B -axis of the rotary table combined with the W-axis in the drilling direction offers a high degree of flexibility in the machining of large and long workpieces. The W axis travel extends beyond the table for this purpose.

Stability in all applications

The robust design of DMG MORI Precision Boring horizontal boring machines ensures maximum precision in all applications. A stable bed and wide, also hand-scraped guideways in the X and Z axes, the stable column and a large spindle diameter as well as a high spindle mass create a solid basis for precise drilling. Large spindle bearings at three points also ensure stability. DMG MORI Precision Boring spindles achieve a torque that is up to ten times higher than that of conventional machining centers. The service life of the tools can thus be doubled.

Automated production with pallet changing system

The further development of DMG MORI Precision Boring machines is based on the requirements of the users. These include higher machining speeds, the machining of more complex applications and simple machine operation. The widespread shortage of skilled workers also demands machining that is as autonomous as possible. In view of the range of components on DMG MORI Precision Boring's horizontal boring machines – large parts and generally shorter running times - automation solutions are a challenge. However, DMG MORI Precision Boring has implemented a standardized pallet changing system that allows new workpieces to be set up during machining.
