22.05.2015 - DMG MORI & Porsche

Pushing the limits of manufacturing

The partnership between DMG MORI and Porsche sheds a new light on common features such as tradition, precision and technological leadership with a global presence. As a technology partner and main sponsor of the Porsche LMP1 racing team, DMG MORI makes a contribution to the success of the motor sport experts.

In 2014, under the motto 'Mission 2014. Our Return', Porsche returned to the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship after an absence of 16 years and made a strong performance with 1 win, 6 podiums and 4 pole positions in its first year. And 2015? Mission accomplished! Porsche has achieved its 17th overall Le Mans victory at the 83rd running of the famous 24-Hour race in a perfect way with a one-two finish. The drivers team from car number 19 won the coveted trophy in their innovative Porsche 919 Hybrid exactly 45 years after Porsche’s first overall win at La Sarthe was achieved. The sister car number 17 added the icing on the cake, when they came home in second.

No other brand has managed to win the world’s toughest endurance race so many times and is connected that closely to the myth of Le Mans. The previous win was also a one-two-back in 1998 when Allan McNish (GBR), Laurent Aiello (FRA) and Stéphane Ortelli (MC) finished first in their Porsche GT1.

Porsche only returned last year to the top level of endurance racing, attracted by the new efficiency regulations. In the brand’s Research Center in Weissach the most innovative car of the entire grid was developed. The Porsche 919 Hybrid has a trend-setting downsizing turbo engine and two energy recovery systems, which all together create a powertrain delivering around 1,000 HP. It works as a racing laboratory for the highest efficiency of future road going sports cars.

In DMG MORI the racing team has found a partner, which as innovation leader in the field of machine tool manufacturing can contribute to its success in motor sport. DMG MORI supports Porsche in two ways: First, as a long-time supplier for companies that make high-quality vehicle components for the team. Second in the course of the current season a dedicated component production department has been set up at DECKEL MAHO Seebach that supplies Porsche with a growing range of vehicle components. The specially installed „Porsche Motorsport CNC Competence Center“ stands for precision, flexibility and the transfer of innovative technologies.

Performance, reliability and precision are factors that determine success or defeat in the world of motor sport, both on the racing track and in the production of a vehicle. A perfect example of this is the cooperation between Porsche and DMG MORI in the LMP1 class. The machine tool manufacturer is exclusive premium partner and at the same time component supplier for the racing team. Among other things complex housings for pump stages or electric motors and end caps for the differential are developed and manufactured in a department at DECKEL MAHO Seebach dedicated solely to Porsche. Bearing shafts, bearing heads and spigots as well as spacers made of thermoplastic are produced here for the pedals. The materials used include steel, aluminium, titanium and plastic. “This involvement is a great chance for us to demonstrate the performance of our machines and our know-how.” says Dr. Thomas Hauer, Head of Application Technology at DECKEL MAHO Seebach about the challenge.

The Management of DECKEL MAHO Seebach GmbH quickly recognised the great potential offered by the cooperation with the Porsche racing team. The state-of-the-art plant in Thuringia is predestined for the role of technology partner: DECKEL MAHO Seebach has extensive expertise in the manufacture of high-precision HSC machining centres and innovative machine tools for universal 5-axis machining such as the DMU eVo linear series. The plant is also characterised by a high level of vertical integration and competence in the manufacture of machine components. All this is combined with in-depth process and machine know-how in its application technology.

The installation of a dedicated department for Porsche underscores the aim of DMG MORI to develop and supply first-class components to the racing team from Weissach, where the Porsche 919 Hybrid is developed and built. A key aspect in this regard is the outstanding interaction of expert competence and high-performance machine tools. Four experienced application technicians are responsible for the challenging work. A high-precision HSC 70 linear machining centre, a DMU 60 eVo linear universal machine plus a CTX beta 800 TC Turn-Mill complete machining centre are currently being used for the production of the components. Here DMG MORI produces components that push the limits of modern manufacturing - both in precision and complexity.

After their hitherto productive cooperation, Porsche and DMG MORI will follow on in 2015 in the footsteps of the last season’s success and significantly expand the range of components. After all the ultimate aim is to develop intelligent manufacturing solutions for demanding parts. Whereby the focus is explicitly on the long-term transfer of technology as the key cornerstone of sustainable success.
